Shipping, clearing and registration

What happens between the auction and your number plates, and what each stage costs.

Shipping to Mombasa

Cars are shipped to Mombasa, which is the port Uganda imports through. When a car is priced CIF Mombasa, the shipping and marine insurance to that port are already included in the price you were quoted.

The sea voyage is the longest part of the wait, and it is the part nobody can speed up.

Clearing through URA

At the port the vehicle is assessed and the taxes fall due. This is where the customs value and the age of the vehicle decide what you pay. Kabex handles the clearing and keeps you informed.

Transport to Kampala

From Mombasa the vehicle travels by road. The price depends on the vehicle’s weight and where it is going — Kampala, or onward to Bunagana or Nimule. The Drive-Home Cost calculator shows the current price for each.

Registration and number plates

Finally the vehicle is registered and plated. Registration, number plates and stamp duty are fixed fees, and personalised plates cost considerably more than standard ones. All of them are in the Drive-Home Cost calculator, and each can be switched on or off if you are handling it yourself.
