Choosing the right car to import

How age, engine size and model choice change what you pay — both to buy and to run.

Age changes the tax, not just the price

An older car costs less to buy and more to clear. Past a certain age the environmental levy is charged, and it is a large percentage of the customs value. It is worth comparing the total landed cost of two model years rather than the sticker price.

Run both through the Drive-Home Cost calculator before deciding. The cheaper car is often the newer one once tax is included.

Engine size follows you for years

A larger engine costs more at the pump every week, and in Kampala traffic that adds up faster than most people expect. Unless you genuinely need the power or the towing capacity, a smaller engine usually wins.

Parts and servicing in Uganda

A model that is common here is cheaper to keep on the road. Parts are in stock, mechanics have seen it before, and resale is easier when you come to sell.

Rare imports can be excellent cars and still be expensive to own, because every part is ordered in.

Where the car comes from

Japan is the most common source for Ugandan imports, with well-documented auction grades and service history. The United Kingdom and other markets are options too. Tell us what you want and we will say honestly where it is best sourced.
